Planning for Recreation and Culture
The City of Sault Ste. Marie has launched Shape the Sault to create a new Official Plan for our city. The Official Plan will guide local decision making on land use, development and public infrastructure over the next 20 years.
A public information session will be held on
Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at the
Art Gallery of Algoma (10 East Street, Sault Ste. Marie) from
4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This come and go session will focus on
planning for recreation and culture in Sault Ste. Marie.
"Community comment is a critical component in creating the City's Official Plan and our staff are currently collecting input," says Don McConnell, Director of Planning. "Tuesday's information session will focus on our community parks and facilities and discuss if they are meeting the interests of users of all ages and abilities today and in the future. The session will also explore how we can grow our city's arts and culture through the way we design and regulate development, while recognizing and protecting our heritage sites and buildings."
The City's FutureSSM team will also be in attendance to share information and collect input on the new Community Cultural Plan.
In addition, new policies are being drafted to strengthen heritage protection in five central neighbourhoods: Pim Hill, Monterey Gardens, Lower Pim, Simpson Leo Upton McGregor, and Downtown Queen Street. Planning staff are currently collecting stories and information from residents regarding the history of these neighbourhoods, with a separate public information session scheduled for each neighbourhood. "The proposed heritage conservation policies recognize the need to provide guidance for the city's preservation of heritage neighbourhoods and individual properties, and our ability to meet our vision of culture and heritage," adds McConnell.
